Hello all and welcome to my blog!
So I’m sick. It’s the beginning of school and I’ve been sick for two weeks, another victim of the frenzy of viruses flying around campus. It started with a fever and continued with a relentless cough and a sore throat that makes swallowing a dreadful event. Aside from taking Tylenol around the clock to dull the soreness and achy feeling that’s taken over my body, one of the only things that brings me any relief is drinking cold beverages and eating soft, cold foods. My go-to staple has been ice cream. I can’t get enough of it. The taste is delicious and the soft texture combined with the cool temperature is a welcome relief to my sore throat and swollen glands as the ice cream glides across my tonsils when I take a bite. I’ve eaten more ice cream in the past week and a half than I’ve eaten in the past year. I was at first reluctant to indulge my desire for ice cream, as I had decided to try to stick to a healthy, well-rounded diet upon my return to school. Flash forward a few days of misery and non-stop coughing later and my reluctance was replaced with an eager embrace of my yummy, icy little friend. Since then I’ve relished in the company McFlurry’s, milkshakes, and Cookies N’ Cream from UDF.
I’m trying to wean myself though, since I know I can’t continue on this way forever. I usually try to eat relatively healthy, so I feel guilty that sweet treats have practically replaced a regular eating pattern of balanced meals. Hopefully it will get easier to revert to a more nutritious diet once my symptoms are alleviated.
I apologize if this post was a bit of a downer for my first post, but I promise I’m not just here to write about sniffling and eating ice cream, so stick with me!
Now you guys tell me: What’s your go-to sick food? Is it as innocent as chicken noodle soup, or something a little more sinister? (Don’t tell me that it’s broccoli, though. No one’s sick food is broccoli.)
Note: I was eating ice cream as I wrote this post. It was very delicious.

Admittedly, UDF has fallen out of favor with me in recent years. I had one particularly bad bowl of ice cream that tasted pretty bland from them and that was it. Graeter’s and Jeni’s have the best ice cream around (You think UDF’s Cookies ‘n’ Cream is good? Get yourself to Graeter’s ASAP).
As for what I eat when I’m sick… hmm, I don’t really get sick often or if I do I tough it out. The last time I was sick enough to be bed ridden was when I had my wisdom teeth removed years ago and I could only eat the softest of foods (Got pudding all over my face because I couldn’t feel half of it. Had to eat the rest of the cup in front of a mirror to make sure it all went in my mouth). Still, I recall liking soup and ramen noodles. Yeah it’s pretty basic, sue me. I just like some hot noodly goodness to get me through a sick phase.

Oh girl, you need to head over to Dairy Queen! (That is BAE.) Also, if you couldnt tell, I love ice cream and can probably eat an entire pint of Ben and Jerrys or go to Dairy Queen every day but, thats unhealthy (or is it…) so. But I hope you are getting over your sickness! I feel your pain on that, considering I have been sick for 3 weeks with the plague as well! But I really enjoyed your post, it was funny and friendly and made me want ice cream. Im going to go eat ice cream now, thanks! 🙂

Do not feel guilty about your sick foods! We are all entitled to treating ourselves. I love ice cream as well, and UDF is always a great option. I don’t get sick too often but Honey Nut Cheerios is for sure my go to when I do. I am excited to read more of your posts. You kept the vibes relaxed and open for discussion. I love how you ended with a question. Feel better!

Loved your post, it’s so relatable and sent me flashbacks of when I had my tonsils taken out last summer (not fun). Great call to action for comments in asking what our favorite sick foods are and I laughed at the broccoli comment, especially since broccoli soup is one of my go-to sick foods! Only thing I would change is being a little more specific about the kinds of ice-cream you like. What kind of McFlurries and milkshakes? Is there a difference between the ice-cream you eat when you’re sick and ice-cream you just eat for pleasure? As for your question: my go to sick food isn’t actually food at all. Whenever I was so sick I had to stay home from school, my parents would only give me caffeine-free diet Coke. So now whenever I’m sick, I’m the one who makes the only gap in the fully stocked caffeine-free diet Coke section in any store unless there’s a slew of old people around me who want some (the only other demographic I’ve ever seen drinking them).
